“It was true: the other mother loved her. But she loved Coraline as a miser loves money, or a dragon loves its gold. In the other mother's button eyes, Coraline knew that she was a possession, nothing more. A tolerated pet, whose behavior was no longer amusing” (Gaiman 104).

The lie that the other mother tells Coraline throughout the entire book is “I love you”. And, after deceiving Coraline and putting her through a nightmare, she can still look her in the eyes and tell her she loves her. But, maybe there is some truth to this. Maybe the other mother is less loving of her daughter, and more obsessive. Coraline compares herself to gold - a mere possession - in the eyes of the other mother, which is the exact reason why their relationship is not genuine. She also compares herself to a pet, which is now old and boring. The other mother liked her for a little, but she will just get bored of her when her behavior is no longer amusing. This is yet another sign of obsessiveness in the other mother. Coraline has realized to be thankful for her real world instead of the other world, because although it looks good on the surface, there is all sorts of danger beneath.
